Notes on the 12/14/09 CONCall

This was an excellent CONCall. Bob Douthitt seems like he will be a good addition, and Dick Walker ’73 gave us a better appreciation of PP55 effort and their view of us.

A few observations:

  1. The calling list will be sent to Jim (who missed the call; said he had an imp meeting just come up) and Bob D. David said he is eager to start calling. I asked the new people on the call (Bob and Walker) to talk about their nonprofit experience and their interest in our project.

  2. PayPal account is set up, according to an email from Outler, but I couldn't find it at the LI portion of the '71 site. I reported on same, and emailed Outler asking where to access it.

  3. Judy reported that we have just over $9,000 in LI account. That includes checks from ourselves and David.

  4. David said he spoke to Leahy at a Thanksgiving function and got the impression that reluctance on the part of PP55 is coming from others, not him. Dick Walker reiterated that PP55 indeed wants us to prove ourselves financially by raising money and demonstrating that "this is more than just a project involving a handful of people in the class." PP55 views this as our "pilot" year to evaluate for support.

  5. Walker said his impression is that majority of funding sources for PP55 each year are from class, but said that parents, corporations, other classes AND foundations are also key players. David suggested that classmates we contact be asked if they are in a corporation with a matching gift program, and, if so, could they ask for a match.

  6. IRS official has told David that papers are in order, but he needs to send articles of incorporation with an official, raised seal; apparently he had sent them a copy.

  7. Discussion about having a contribution form such as Doug Pike has for his campaign. Douthitt is going to look it over and make suggestions. Could be sent via PDF rather than worrying about printing.

  8. There will be a 20th anniversary function for PP55 at reunions on May 27, according to Dick Walker. Suggests this would be a good target for us to shoot for in terms of making a bigger splash.

  9. I brought up, and David welcomed, your notion of hiring someone to work from home and not incur PP55 overhead.

  10. I mentioned that PAW is considering an interview and profile of the LI, but suggested we try to postpone that until we have a story to tell.

Next call is set for Jan 18 in stead of the 11th due to major conflicts by some important members of the team.

Subject: Agenda for 71LI/ PP55 Meeting 9-1-09

CLICK HERE For a review of the 71LI / PP55 ... We look forward to our meeting on Tuesday, September 1 at 11:00 AM to plan a potential 71LI and PP55 joint venture. Because we are expecting as many as twelve attendees (some by phone, some in person) and because we are on a tight timeline, we want to be sure to use our time constructively. Please look through the attached agenda and prepare your thoughts. If you have questions or comments to share before the meeting, please reply to all on this email list.

The primary goal of this meeting is to leave with a well-designed program proposal to present to our respective Boards. This proposal should include measurable goals, and a firm timeline for how we plan to accomplish our joint venture in the pilot year. The PP55 Program Committee would like to receive a proposal from our group on or around September 10 in order to make a recommendation to the Board on September 26. This is a tight timeline, but if we take the time now to prepare for this meeting, it can be done!

I can chair the meeting, and Bill Lewis will help begin the meeting by providing background on what has been done thus far. Kathleen Reilly has offered to help facilitate the goal setting discussion as needed. We especially want to hear from those individuals on the 71LI Board and PP55 Board who have not been involved in recent conversations, but will be majorly involved in implementing the program.

This is an exciting time for both of our organizations. Our small PP55/71LI group has enjoyed this collaboration thus far and look forward to getting into the “nuts and bolts” at this next meeting. All this, directions, and more in the attached.

See you in Princeton!

To further a joint collaboration to create an encore career effort for Princetonians in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, a document was transmitted on June 15, 2009 by Bill Lewis ’71, President of the 71 Legacy Initiative (71LI), to Princeton Project 55 (PP55). This document outlined a proposal for a joint effort between the 71LI and PP55 to progress ... "a new program [for] Princeton graduates … [those] emerging from a first career and willing to consider pubic service in an 'encore' or legacy career".

This fine document was prepared by David McI. Williams '71 P08. To download a copy, please CLICK HERE.

On June 25, 2009, Bill Lewis ’71 received an e-mail from Dr. Bill Leahy ’66, President of PP55. In this e-mail Bill states:

“Thanks for your prompt re-draft presented to us on June 15th. [It is] an excellent "white paper". Our subcommittee (The PP55 Steering Committee) on the Encore Careers effort has reviewed the document and had a conference call yesterday. (06/24/09)

We are gathering final points to send on to you, probably next Monday, [June] 29th for your consideration.

Our hope is that possibly that next week, we might have conference call or meeting re: your reaction to the distillation of our thoughts. The "group" from PP55 will be Kenly [Webster ‘55], Kathleen Reilly [Exec. Director – PP55], myself, and Bill Richardson ‘73.”

Updates from this meeting / CONCall will be transmitted to the 71LI Core Team as they occur.

Board Members and Friends of the 71 Class Legacy Initiative:

Re: Background information for Saturday's meeting of the 71 CLI

As I mentioned to you in a previous e-mail, there will be a meeting of the 71 Class Legacy Initiative (71 CLI) on Reunions' Saturday from 10:00 AM --> 11:30 in 212 Frist.  The purpose of this meeting is to outline a proposal for a joint effort between the 71 CLI and Princeton Project 55 (PP55) to progress ... "a new program [for] Princeton graduates …  [those] emerging from a first career and willing to consider pubic service in an 'encore' or legacy career".

Please see the attached document prepared by David McI. Williams '71 P08.  While there will be hard-copy of this at our Saturday AM meeting it would be helpful for all of you to read this document in preparation for the on-going discussion.

These are exciting times for the 71 CLI.  With the support and collaboration of PP55, I am sure that we can bring our dream of placing Princetonians in second careers in the not-for-profit world to a reality.

Please feel free to contact me on my cell-phone of 240.372.7338 with any comments and / or questions.

Warmest regards,

Bill Lewis '71

Background on the 71 Class Legacy Initiative:

Now that we have passed the 35th anniversary of our Princeton graduation, many in the Class of ’71 are searching for ways to make a difference … to “give back” in some special way. And, as we have coalesced over time into a vibrant and cohesive class entity, we all recognize that the talent and accomplishments of our fellow classmates is quite exceptional. Many of us would like to think that in our later years, we can do something as a kind of recognition of all the opportunities that have been given to us.

But, how do we use our collective talents, resources, influence, and positions to establish an ongoing Class of ’71 program to make a difference in the world?

Let's call this the Class of '71 Legacy Initiative.

The ’71 Legacy Initiative should capture the very spirit of Princeton and should be created with the ideals of our University's motto:

Princeton in the Nation’s Service … in the service of all nations!

… as well as:

'Our hearts will give, while we shall live ...'

Idea: In the spring of 2006, our Class President, Bill Lewis, approached Art Lowenstein and asked if he would help lead the ’71 Legacy Initiative. This would be an exploratory effort to determine what the Class of ’71 should do to: a) establish an ongoing activity to “make a difference”; and b) to better understand what the Classes of ’55 and ’69 have done in this important Community Service arena.

Progress over time:

  • A letter that Art sent to the Class in January 2007 summarizes some our initial meetings/ discussions/thoughts/directions of the '71 Legacy Initiative. CLICK HERE to read this letter.

  • The Princeton Project 55 (PP55) / Class of ‘69 efforts consist of placing current undergraduate and young Alumni into either Summer Internships (The ’69 focus) and/or into year-long fellowships (PP55).

  • During the winter/spring of 2007, Princeton Project 55 (PP55) approached the Class of ’71 to expand upon the existing programs – please see the diagram below! – to provide a similar service for Princeton alums in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. The idea would be to place these Princetonians in permanent positions with not-for-profits that are performing worthwhile roles in society, particularly dealing with disadvantaged or socially responsible causes.

  • The ’71 Legacy Initiative will capitalize on PP55’s suggestion and create a *NEW* program to facilitate the placement of Tigers in non-profits as a second career.
